Sport Climbing News (02/09/2004)

There has been plenty of activity during the past year at several crags in the province, with a number of hard routes being sent by the local Natal sport climbers.

  • Notable redpoints in the last few months include repeats of the classic "Paragon (30)" at the Wave cave by Thomas Vergunst and Grant Cleaveland (who got the route first go "off the couch" having redpointed it several years previously) and redpoints of "Mantra (29)" at the Canyon by Thomas Vergunst and Scott Sinclair.

  • Thanks to the enthusiasm of Gavin Peckham a number of new moderate routes have been opened at the Wit Umfolozi crag as well as further afield at the Mount Everest Game Park. The KZN section sponsored R1000 (unrelated to the bolting fund) towards the bolting of new routes here.

  • There has also been plenty of activity at the Boneyard, Canyon and Winston Park due largely to the efforts of Dave Drummond. Several bolts have been replaced on routes at the Boneyard and a new route opened (Kitty Soft, 19, FA Dave Drummond 2003).
Winston Park has also become more popular with Steve Bradshaw giving permission to retrobolt some of his routes at this (previously) under-utilised crag. An excellent new route has also been opened at Winston Park (Tabula Rasa, 24, FA Dave Drummond).
Members should make sure they attend next years Winston Park meet (hosted by Dave) to be held on 14 March 2004.

  • Two superb new multi-pitch routes have also been recently opened at Howick Falls by the sections president Mark Misslehorn and Tony van Tonder.
