Please note: The statistics presented here relate only to rescues in which the MCSA-KZN Search and Rescue team has participated.

Rescue Statistics Highlights:
  • Among climbing-related rescues, 55% were for climbers on trad routes, a further 25% were soloing, 10% were sport-climbing and the remaining 10% ice-climbing.
  • Drakensberg rescues involve more than twice as many men as women, but the ratio of body-recoveries is much more heavily skewed towards men at about 4:1.
  • Rescues of visitors to the country were mainly of either British or German tourists.
  • A significant number of rescues were as a result of people falling off paths - please remember to keep focused even when you have the security of a path.
