Roger Nattrass has recently updated his comprehensive book "A Climber's Guide to KwaZulu-Natal Rock". Roger's 256 page guide includes 800 routes at most of the popular trad and sport climbing venues (Kloof Gorge, Monteseel, Shongweni, Umgeni Valley, etc.) but does not include Drakensberg rock or ice climbs. Fantastic photo's - 180 of them, and worth the price alone - topos, maps, etc. Click here to purchase your copy.
NB: If you make any use of these pages, the please make a positive contribution by sending constructive criticism, corrections, updates, feed-back, etc to Scott Sinclair.
KZN - Significant Venues
Visiting climbers who require further information can contact club, who will (probably) be able to put you in touch with local climbers. This can greatly facilitate your visit. Foreign climbers visiting this country would do well to start by buying a copy of the Lonely Planet guide to South Africa and may find this link to a Grade Conversion Chart useful. More information about climbing in South Africa can be found at SA Climb and SACIN.
Information about all these venues may be obtained from "A Climber's Guide to Natal Rock" by Roger Nattrass. RDs for many of the sport routes in KZN are available in "A Sport Climbing Guide - KwaZulu - Natal" by Harley Green. Routes in the Drakensberg mountains are recorded in "Rock Climbs of the Natal Drakensberg" published by the MCSA. Copies of the last two guides can probably be obtained from 'Bush & Bundu' outdoor centre in Pietermaritzburg - tel: 033-394 5112 and ask for Cesar.

Disclaimer : Whilst I have made a reasonable effort to provide useful and accurate information, I accept absolutely no responsibility whatsoever for the accuracy of the information that follows. You make use of it entirely at your own risk.
I have collected and assembled these pages because of the difficulty I have experienced in trying to obtain information about climbing venues in and around KwaZulu / Natal. Many of the published books of RDs are out of print. Even those currently available are often difficult for a visiting climber to locate. Several climbers have made contributions to the following pages and they are mentioned by name wherever appropriate.
Several KZN crags are not yet included in these pages - mainly because I have never climbed there, or because I have not got around to it yet. The climbing venues in KZN that are not yet included are:
1. The Shongweni Dam area including:
2. Colorado, Ringwood and Craiglea - nothing of any great significance at these venues.
